Specifications answer different questions
A larger screen, heavier battery or higher speaker wattage may be useful in one situation and inconvenient in another. Product comparison becomes misleading when every maximum value receives a green badge and every minimum value receives a red badge.
SpecMeter classifies fields before drawing a meter. Some fields can support a directional statement in a defined context, such as lower weight for portability. Others remain neutral because the right value depends on room size, hand size, use case or personal preference.
A proxy is not the outcome
Megapixels are not complete camera quality. Battery capacity is not measured battery life. Memory quantity is not complete system performance. Each may be relevant, but each is only one input among many.
A useful interface names the field precisely. It says listed battery capacity rather than battery life when only capacity is available. This wording prevents the display from promising an outcome that the source data does not establish.
- Name the measured field, not the hoped-for outcome.
- Separate product fit from product quality.
- Show tradeoffs whenever a direction is preference-dependent.
Preference controls should be transparent
A fit score can be helpful when customers choose the priorities themselves. The score should show the selected priorities, the weight assigned to each one and the fields used in the calculation.
SpecMeter treats this as a personal fit calculation rather than a universal product rating. Two people can reasonably receive different outcomes from the same underlying specifications.
